It’s mid-October and I am writing about setting hr consultants ottawa goals for next year.  What gives?  I want to give you a head start on your thinking.  Turn your head and it will be Thanksgiving.  One more turn and you will be working on Christmas holiday activities.  So, back to the subject at hand.  Maybe you are responsible for writing HR goals for your organization for the first time.  Maybe you are doing it for the 25th time.  It doesn’t matter.  In either situation the starting point will always be the same blank sheet of paper.
Since 1981 when the acronym was first introduced we have all been encouraged to write S.M.A.R.T. goals.  We know our goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based or some variant of the letters.  It was good advice in 1981 and it is good advice now so we should all plan on writing S.M.A.R.T. goals for 2015.  Next, as we are contemplating what our HR goals should be for a given year, it never hurts to see what our fellow HR colleagues are doing.  I decided to do a bit of research on HR goal setting.  I came across the following curious goal statement, “Human Resources will contribute to (Company X’s) mission and vision by living our vision of providing a seamless, consistent, customer-focused and quality-driven system of services, products, tools and programs to ensure a competent, vibrant and diverse workforce”.  What?  Really!  So much for what at least one organization is in for next year.
Back to the basics, which for me means keeping things simple and keeping things clear.  After going through the annual ritual of setting HR goals for over 30 years and after having spent an inordinate amount of time trying to be fresh and creative from year to year, I have come to the realization that my HR goal setting always boiled down to the same two goal areas.  I set goals around (1) EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT and RETENTION and (2) IMPROVING EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION.  Start with these two goal areas, tailor your goals to what is happening in and around your organization and you will do just fine supporting your business and your employees.  Good luck!
You can’t make this stuff up:  A particular division of a company I worked with was so proud of the turkeys they distributed at Thanksgiving one year that they decided to ask employees how they felt about them on their annual employee opinion survey.  One employee responded, and I quote, “Turkey?, I thought it was a chicken!”.
