It’s mid-October and I am writing about setting hr consultants ottawa goals for next year.  What gives?  I want to give you a head start on your thinking.  Turn your head and it will be Thanksgiving.  One more turn and you will be working on Christmas holiday activities.  So, back to the subject at hand.  Maybe you are responsible for writing HR goals for your organization for the first time.  Maybe you are doing it for the 25th time.  It doesn’t matter.  In either situation the starting point will always be the same blank sheet of paper.
Since 1981 when the acronym was first introduced we have all been encouraged to write S.M.A.R.T. goals.  We know our goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based or some variant of the letters.  It was good advice in 1981 and it is good advice now so we should all plan on writing S.M.A.R.T. goals for 2015.  Next, as we are contemplating what our HR goals should be for a given year, it never hurts to see what our fellow HR colleagues are doing.  I decided to do a bit of research on HR goal setting.  I came across the following curious goal statement, “Human Resources will contribute to (Company X’s) mission and vision by living our vision of providing a seamless, consistent, customer-focused and quality-driven system of services, products, tools and programs to ensure a competent, vibrant and diverse workforce”.  What?  Really!  So much for what at least one organization is in for next year.
Back to the basics, which for me means keeping things simple and keeping things clear.  After going through the annual ritual of setting HR goals for over 30 years and after having spent an inordinate amount of time trying to be fresh and creative from year to year, I have come to the realization that my HR goal setting always boiled down to the same two goal areas.  I set goals around (1) EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT and RETENTION and (2) IMPROVING EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION.  Start with these two goal areas, tailor your goals to what is happening in and around your organization and you will do just fine supporting your business and your employees.  Good luck!
You can’t make this stuff up:  A particular division of a company I worked with was so proud of the turkeys they distributed at Thanksgiving one year that they decided to ask employees how they felt about them on their annual employee opinion survey.  One employee responded, and I quote, “Turkey?, I thought it was a chicken!”.

Why It’s Important to Define Your Business Goals

Operating your own business is a big commitment, in fact barely 10% of people are willing to undertake the challenge.  Most businesses fail within the first two years, making planning and commitment even more important to the entrepreneur.  If you don’t which way you’re going how can you ever arrive at a destination?  First you need to define your business goals and then move toward them with purpose.

Imagine for a minute that you are a boat adrift on the open water, you have no sails and no engines.  Everyone on board is subjected to the whims of the waves.  Don’t let your business be that boat.  Take the time and clarify your business goals, have some direction.  You have a crew that can help you by doing their part.  Now that you can appreciate the importance of planning, it’s time to make a plan.  If you’re unsure what questions to ask yourself watch the video below.

Know where you come from

This is often overlooked when you are trying to establish your business goals, you need to take a long look at where you have been and how you managed to succeed in the past.  This helps you learn what your strengths are.  Be honest in what your successes and failures were.  Understanding this will help you determine how your business goes forward in the market.  Break your strengths down into specifics not generalities like “provide good customer service”.  Have you exceeded sales quotas, are you strong in things like ontime delivery or upsells?  Your goals should reflect where you want your company to improve as well. Know where you are now

Don’t get lost in the past or in planning the future, you still need to have an eye on the current market situation in order to plan your next move.  Learn the trends in your industry, so you can work within them.  Like people companies can adapt and change in order to survive.  If you have elaborate plans in the future and they are beyond your present means the chances of success are reduced.  It’s important to be realistic and honest with yourself at this stage too.  Plan for achievable goals.

Last but not least, know where you are going

Nobody can predict the future and the best laid plans can go wrong, but don’t allow yourself to become paralyzed trying to predict the future.  This is called analysis paralysis and it can kill your business.  You’ve done your research and made your company into a viable enterprise.  Now is the time to lay the foundation for your future.  Focus on the things you do well and take the opportunity to increase the value of your company to your customers.

Remember that without goals you are wandering aimlessy, choose a path and act definitively.

Are Golf Lessons Worth The Price?

Are golf lessons really worth spending your time, money, and effort on? Most local golf courses you visit will have professionals who’ll offer to teach you for $35 to $150. However, when you weigh the benefits of learning the sport to the cost it’ll take to learn, ask yourself, “What do I want to accomplish with this sport?” “Am I doing this for a hobby, or do I plan on making this my career?” Depending on how much you’re willing to put in and what your reasons are, golf lessons can either be beneficial or costly.  Don’t forget how many business deals are actually closed on the golf course either, a lesson or two might not hurt.

Time

For starters, golf can be an extremely hard sport to master. You don’t just walk in, swing a few times and magically become Tiger Woods. It may seem easy to a spectator or bystander, but there’s actually a lot of technique involved. The precise judgement you must execute to decide how hard to swing your club, the wind, and the distance must be considered thoroughly.

Flexibility, age, and fitness level can also be an issue. If you’re able to get in on the green and practice maybe once or twice a week then you’ll see some improvement. However if you have commitment problems or your schedule isn’t flexible enough to allow for practice, you’re probably better off keeping your money in your wallet.

Practice

If you go out alone and attempt to teach yourself, then you’ll probably be spending more time looking for the ball you launched into a tree or into a pond rather than learning the correct way to play. Your teacher will probably counsel you on your flexibility, and tell you that having good core strength is essential to having a strong swing.

In addition relaxing your muscles before and keeping your head still during the swing are just some of the important techniques you’ll need to improve upon your game. This is important whether you’re learning just for fun or to actually make this a career. If you’re doing this just for fun, then by all means have fun.

Don’t sweat it if you don’t show any progress over the next few weeks. If you’re doing this because you want to become the next Jack Nicklaus, then you might wanna put in a little more effort and concentration. Whether golfing is worth your time and money is dependent on what you want and how much elbow grease you’re willing to put in. Who knows, you might just become the next Sam Snead.
